Heron of Alexandria

Some of the earliest examples of machines powered by heated air can be found in a treatise on Pneumatics written around 50AD by Hero, who was possibly a Greek, who lived in the Egyptian city of Alexandria.
This work was translated from the Greek in to English by Bennet Woodcroft and published in 1851. An on line copy can be down loaded from Rochester University
